I hadn’t planned to still be in Guatemala in January 2023 which just proves that sailing plans are written in the sand to be washed away by the rising tide.
This will be a short post because I hope to leave Guatemala in mid-January with two crew and head to the Bay Islands of Honduras.
The feature photograph was taken in Guatemala City on Guatemala Independence Day in September 2022.
I was planning to take a New Year’s Day sunrise photograph on the river to use as the feature photograph. The alarm went off at 04:55, and by 05:15 when I was ready to jump into the dinghy for a trip upriver in the dark….it was cloudy and raining! So I went back to bed!
This will be my final week in Guatemala. Both crew, Aleksandra and Kate, are visiting Flores including a trip to the Mayan ruins of Tikal. Both girls wanted to visit Flores, and I wanted them to bond as crew. In reality they disliked each other and spent little time together….quite how they hoped to spend a month together on a 36’ boat is beyond comprehension.
I left Seabatical marina with one crew to anchor overnight in Cayo Quemado, and the following day pass through the spectacular gorge of Rio Dulce to Livingston, where we cleared out of Guatemala. Later that afternoon we cleared the sand bar at the mouth of the river to anchor overnight at Tres Puntas.
Bye bye Guatemala!
